Pop in the Park

On the 7^th – 9^th June the local citizens of March town joined together once again in the park for the annual summer festival. Here you can find a hand-picked selection of the most talented people ranging from rock bands to street dancers and gentle lullabies. The fun-filled event offers three different themed days to suit everybody – Friday is Rock in the Park, Saturday is Pop in the Park and Sunday is the family friendly Picnic in the Park. 

 A lot of organisation goes into the planning process for this event, with more volunteers dedicating their free time each year to see the successful running of the whole weekend. Thanks to the good-willed nature of these volunteers, the event is also able to run for free each year attracting hundreds of people, whether they are young or old. 

 There is also a large variety of food, refreshments and treats available which are provided by external companies. You can find hog roasts, burger vans, ice creams, freshly cooked donuts and the classic ‘fairground style’ sweet stalls. The event is a great place for young children too as the park is filled with rides, bouncy castles and win-a-prize activities to keep them entertained. As an events manager, it is clear that once again an enthusiastic team of organisers have worked hard to organise and run March’s biggest event.

CRC Live Lounge

On Friday 21^st June, us, the events students at Cambridge Regional College organized a live radio set broadcast on 'Live' radio. The set was called CRC Live Lounge. The music played was blasted round through the College so many students could listen to the live and prerecorded music, as well as an interview with the acoustic musician. The event was a complete success and was enjoyed by many. The acoustic musician was called Lewis Eldrige, he played his own song called ‘Two.” He had a fantastic voice and really blew the audience away. We also had many pre-recorded tracks from artists such as Jimmy Ostler and Marley Hoare, which featured a dubstep genre of music, which was spot on with what much of our target audience wanted from the event. The radio students also excelled themselves and really did us proud by making our event the best it could be. A quick shout out to the two radio presenters, Bex and Tom, thank you so much for your hard work. As our event was such a success, we hope to produce another event like this in the future but on a bigger scale. If you came to our event, we hope you enjoyed it and make sure to come to other events held by the CRC events team.

Searching for Work Experience in Events Management

The first year of my Events Management course is coming to an end and I have been thinking about doing work experience during the summer. In one of my lessons I had to research jobs in the industry, by doing this I learnt that most jobs in Events Management require experience therefore I decided I would use my free time over the summer period to gain some experience.

I put together a short email stating who I was, what I do and what I am looking for and I sent it out to local businesses that involve some sort of Event Managing for example hotels, golf clubs and racecourses. Unfortunately I was unsuccessful as I only received one reply from a local hotel which said they did not need my help. This was rather degrading and knocked my confidence a little but I was advised to keep trying and not give up by friends and family.

I decided to expand my search to a wider range of far out places that would be more difficult to get to but I was willing to find a way in order to gain experience. I researched and collected contact details for businesses that specified in Events Management around Cambridge and Peterborough and created a more detailed email that let companies know that if they need a CV I have one available to send on request. My second attempt proved much more beneficial with one company sending me links to other opportunities such as stewarding at events, most companies saying they have nothing to offer me at the moment but they will keep me in mind for the future and one company asking if I would like to meet up and discuss in more depth. This was a very positive outcome and gave me the confidence to carry on searching and hopefully find a suitable opportunity closer to home.

I spoke to a close friend about my ideas and what I was looking for and she happened to work at a hotel called the Marriot which is not far from where I live. I had looked into working at the Marriot but I was unable to find a contact detail, which is where my friend came in handy as she had been given a letter about an upcoming event that she had to be working for and at the bottom of the letter was a contact detail for ‘The Events Team’ at the Marriot, which was perfect. I spoke to another friend called Ben who worked at the same hotel and he was close family friends with one of the Events Mangers there and he asked if work experience would be possible and she said that they don’t normally offer it, but because she was a family friend of Ben’s she would do it. She asked if I would give her a call the next day so I did. She asked me a few questions and I made it clear that my work would be voluntary and that I was not expecting money as it was an experience for my benefit. She was happy to take me on but needed to confirm it with the Human Resources department first and then she would ring me back…

I am delighted to be having work experience in such a global brand and I think this will look very good on my CV and to potential future employers.

Red Carpet Event for Hair & Beauty Students

Studying Events Management at Cambridge Regional College means that we have to organise events within the college. Recently Natalie Tombleson , who is in charge of Media Makeup, talked to us about planning a red carpet event in the college for the media makeup and hair & beauty students to celebrate their final project at the end of the year. As part of this event we were required to produce two 4-5 minute video of the students whilst they are creating their final piece, one was for hair & beauty and the other for media makeup. The videos will be shown at the red carpet event for the students and their family to see. This was a new and exciting project for us as the idea was appealing and we don’t usually get the opportunity to film our own videos.

I was in the hair & beauty team and my role was cinematographer. The filming took place over two days, as level 2 students were in on Wednesday and level 3 were in on Thursday. For hair & beauty there were 5 cinematographers overall, so we got lots of good quality footage!

After getting the footage of the students on both days, the editors put together the videos. This took some time as it was a lengthy and difficult process due to minor technical difficulties.

The red carpet event came around quickly and it was unsure whether or not the videos would be ready in time, but there was no need to panic because the editors finished their videos before the event took place so they were ready to be screened. The turnout was great! The atmosphere was busy and lively. Everyone in the room applauded when they finished and we received great feedback. The event was a success! It ran smoothly and everyone loved the videos! Videos are being screening around the college.

Sue Breeze described the event as, "The end of year 2 showcase for students within the Performing Arts, Core Radio, Rizing Games, music and Banter." Her intention behind holding the event is to "raise the profile of the media, music and performing arts sector of Cambridge Regional College.)" Some of the participants of the media festival include 5 ex students who have returned from University to support the event.

Practical Guide To Drugs At Festivals

Here’s a quick guide and a few pointers when preparing for the festival season:

 

·      Know your limits.

·      Learn about the effects and risks of different drugs before you take anything.

·      Don’t ever mix with alcohol or prescription drugs.

·      Be patient- may take a while to kick in.

·      Don’t buy from strangers because you may not know what you are buying.

·      Don’t drive- the effects can last hours, even days after taking them.

 Looking after yourself:

·      EAT!
 

·      Drink LOTS of water!

·      Don’t wander off

·      Don’t over do it/overheat

 Dealing with Bad Effects:

·      Comedown- have a glass of orange juice! Vitamin C really helps.

·      If you’re feeling ill/paranoid- find a quiet place to relax with a friend

·      If you’re feeling dizzy, sudden headaches, cramps, sickness, difficulty peeing- sit down, drink a soft drink and splash some water on your face.

·      If you or your friend collapse, stop sweating, suffer from convulsions, has difficulty breathing, severe tiredness- seek medical attention immediately.

DON’T FORGET THAT IT’S ILLEGAL TO POSSESS DRUGS... NOT HAVE THEM IN YOUR SYSTEM SO IF YOU’RE IN TROUBLE THEN DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP FOR FEAR OF BEING ARRESTED! MAKE SURE THE PARAMEDICS KNOW WHAT YOU’VE TAKEN.

You don’t forget to back your sleeping bag to wrap you up, so don’t forget to pack a condom to wrap him up

So you’re heading to a festival for the weekend, you’ve packed sun cream to protect you from the sun, paracetamol to protect you from a hangover and a sleeping bag to protect you from the cold. But those aren’t the only forms of protection you will need…

Safe and clean sex is a must at festivals and here are four top tips:

1.    If you’re on the pill and associating yourself with alcohol you’ve pretty much cancelled out your contraception so you’re unprotected.

2.    Use a condom regardless, its unlikely you will end up sleeping with someone you know here and if you don’t know him or her, you don’t know his or her sexual history.

3.    Make sure you pack wet wipes, hand sanitizer and wash kits, people at festivals are known for their lack of hygiene and that includes down below.

4.    If giving or receiving oral, make sure your mouths are clean, you don’t want any bacterial infections on your genitals to take home with you.

How to survive the Glastonbury weather!

Glastonbury. One of the biggest, well known festivals in the world. Glastonbury is famous for its ‘hippy’ atmosphere and its great music. However, it is also known for its crazy, unpredictable weather!

Top tips for surviving Glastonbury’s weather:

·     Be prepared for ANYTHING, Glastonbury festival is known for ranging from two extremes weather wise.

·     Bring high factor sun cream, if you get badly burnt, it WILL ruin your time.

·     Bring as much WATERPROOF clothing as possible. You wont regret it when you’re swimming to the arenas.

·     MAKE sure your tent is properly pegged down, if not you could have a case of the old Dorothy and Toto.

·     Bring a range of both skimpy and warm clothing, better to not risk being cooked alive or catching hypothermia.

As long as you follow my advice, you will have a fantastic time…… Get ready to embrace the Glastonbury spirit.

 

Festival safety – light up your life

Purchase light-up shoelaces so that you don’t lose your friends. If you get drunk and wander off you will always be able to be found, even if you have passed out. Just make sure your shoelaces are turned on. Chloe Sutton x

Clothes Show Live Trip 2013 !

Level 3 Events Management students went to the Clothes Show Live on a trip to take a behind the scenes look at a popular national event.

For all fashion fanatics the Clothes Show Live is the place to be, boasting itself as the UK’s largest fashion and beauty show with thousands passing through the doors of the 5 day event. Run between the sixth and tenth of December, it would have been crazy for us to pass off an opportunity like this with tickets starting at just £27, it is an event that is made easily affordable and accessible to all of us.

 

From 9am on the Monday morning, Birmingham NEC was crammed full of excited girls queuing for their turn into the events main highlight – its very own fashion show held within Suzuki fashion theatre. This year’s theme was ‘Night in a department store’ and saw many of the UK’s finest and most slender models waltz in an elegant manner down the fast paced catwalk revealing the seasons latest high street trends. Hosted by Grace Woodward, previous judge of Britain and Ireland’s next top model, and armed alongside a team of the most talented street dancers and chart topping band JLS, crowds were filled with extraordinary amounts of energy whilst dancing along to their favourite upbeat songs and a series of DJ sets.

Leaving the fashion show and feeling motivated towards jazzing up your own wardrobe, there are over 500 stalls for you to work your way around throughout the rest of the day, whether you want to bag yourself a bargain or experiment with some new beauty brands. With goody bags being offered with £50 worth of products for just £10, it is easy to be tempted and indulge into beauty brands such as Rimmel.

TOWIE star Amy Childs and leading hair brand owner Lee Stafford were also both available for photographs, advice and product signings which was a real winner for us! There was so much choice from vintage independent brands to the biggest high street retailers.

 

A well organised event packed with fun and opportunities, it is unsurprising that the show has now been running for 25 years and plans to return next year, so make sure you don’t miss out on your ticket!
